L 4.3" x W 3" x H 6.3" Expertly positioned on a distinctively carved pedestal, This olive wood carving shows Virgin Mary to be carrying the infant Jesus while riding on the back of a donkey on her way to Egypt. Saint Joseph walks alongside the weary travelers. The Holy family’s flight into Egypt was to escape the wrath of King Herod who issued orders for the death of children below the age of two in Bethlehem. Matthew 2:17 "Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: 18 “A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.”
