What is the Assumption of Mary?

Also called “the Falling Asleep of the Blessed Virgin Mary”, the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary falls on the 15th of August every year, and it is celebrated through a feast. It commemorates the completion of the ever Virgin Mary’s earthly life and her assumption into heaven, body and soul. The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven is a required belief and a defined dogma of the Catholic Church.

What Scriptural basis is there for the teaching?

There are some passages in the Bible that resonate with the Assumption, but they’re not very particular. Although the Bible does not talk about this assumption explicitly, Mary’s perfect union with Jesus’s destiny is strongly emphasized.

Is there a church that commemorates this Assumption?

Yes! Dormition Abbey in Jerusalem, which is also known as Basilica of the Assumption, commemorates this Assumption. It’s the place where the Blessed Virgin Mary was taken physically and spiritually to Heaven. The Abbey of the Dormition is very close to the Upper Room.

How can we apply this teaching to our everyday lives?

This teaches us that earth is only a trying phase that we have to go through to reach heaven. Even though sometimes our daily life problems get the best of us, we have to remember that if we believe in God and his teachings, and the Blessed Mary who is watching us from heaven, we will overcome our problems and our fears, live more peacefully, and hopefully be received into heavenly glory.

A Catholic Prayer for the Assumption:

Almighty and everlasting God,
You have taken up body and soul
into the heavenly glory the Immaculate Virgin Mary,
Mother of Your Son: Grant, we beseech You,
that, ever intent upon heavenly things,
we may be worthy to be partakers of her glory.
Through Jesus Christ Your Son, our Lord,
who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit,
One God, forever and ever. Amen.
- The Roman Missal

"Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you, blessed are you among women" (Luke 1:28)
